This is without a doubt one of the things we’ve been asked most often over the years.  So many times, so many frustrated people, so many instances of “I really need to sage, but…”

Let’s face it, there are many reasons why you might not want smoke in your house/business/vicinity.  Maybe you have a new baby, a sensitive pet, or a family member with a health risk like asthma or COPD.  Or you might own a business or work in a place where it would not be practical or appropriate to burn things.  Whatever reasons you have are valid.  And there are solutions, we just need to apply a little creativity.

The following is just a sampling of methods that we like to use or suggest in situations where smudging is needed but smoke is unwanted.  You’ll notice that each suggestion is labeled with an element or elements.  There’s just…

The Stone of Emotional Balance: Moonstone ~ Good Witches Homestead

via The Stone of Emotional Balance: Moonstone – Good Witches Homestead

Moonstone represents the great Mother Goddess. Her strength lies in her gentleness, and her ability to experience process, and neutralize her feelings.

Moonstone is one of the most mythical of all gemstones. With its exotic, lunar name and its milky unique rainbow sheen, moonstone is highly prized by many practitioners of crystal and stone healing, as well as some mystic religions.

A stone for “new beginnings”, Moonstone is a stone of inner growth and strength. It soothes emotional instability and stress, and stabilizes the emotions, providing calmness.

Moonstone has been associated with the emotional energy of the moon and is reputed to help you go through your transitions with optimism. It is the stone of “wishes, hopes and dreams” that helps you remember that everything comes in its own divine time. It attracts nurturing people and energies. It is also known as a “goddess stone” since many ancient cultures associated the female presence of God with the moon. Moonstone has the energy vibration of ‘Yin’.

  • Brings good fortune
  • Assists in foretelling the future
  • Enhances intuition
  • Promotes inspiration
  • Brings success in love as well as business matters
  • Offers protection on land and at sea

HISTORY

Moonstone is associated with all goddesses, but especially the Moon goddesses. Resembling the Moon or “moonshine”, the ancient Romans believed the stone was actually formed from moonlight and that the wearers of moonstone would receive wisdom, wealth, and success in battle. In the Orient, people believed Moonstones were actual rays of moonlight that had solidified, and that the shimmering light held within the stone was a good spirit that lived there. Hindus thought shimmering Moonstones to be earthbound bits of moonbeams, and the stone is still considered sacred in India today.

Amulets of Moonstone were frequently hung in fruit trees to ensure fruitful and abundant crops. In Asia and Europe, the stone was associated with love and fidelity and was often worn when trying to attract a faithful lover. The Indian culture believes this elegant and subtly beautiful gem will arouse tender passion and holds them sacred. It was believed that if held in the mouth, Moonstone would help one make proper decisions. This versatile stone was also used in ancient times to cure insomnia.

Due to its association with water, Moonstone is said to be protective of those at sea. It is also protective of those that travel at night and especially during New Moon phases, and was once called the “Traveler’s Stone”. It was also thought to protect against insanity, epilepsy, and any adverse wanderings of the mind. The ancient Greeks called Moonstone “Aphroselene” after the goddesses Aphrodite (love) and Selene (moon).

GENERAL HEALING PROPERTIES

Moonstone is used by healers to stimulate the functioning of the pineal gland and balance internal hormone cycles with nature’s rhythms. Moonstone is a stone of inner growth and strength. Though often considered to be a woman’s stone, it can be beneficial to men in opening the emotional self. Its variants of different colors are supposed to have different healing effects, e.g. the gray moonstone is better for intellectual purposes, whereas the peach-colored one for spiritual and feminine connections.

moonstone_palm_stonePHYSICAL

Moonstone aids the digestive system, assimilates nutrients, eliminates toxins and fluid retention, and alleviates degenerative conditions of skin, hair, eyes, and fleshy organs such as the liver and pancreas. It stimulates the pineal gland and balances hormonal cycles, being excellent for PMS, conception, pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. It is a good stone to carry with you when pregnant.

EMOTIONAL

Moonstone helps to soothe and balance the emotions. It assists in the mastery of your emotions by bringing them under the control of your will, instead of repressing or expressing them. It will bring emotions and feelings under control without becoming hardened to the human suffering seen on a daily basis.

This is a great stone for Doctors, Nurses, Technicians, and other Health Care Workers, who sometimes feel they must repress much of what they feel in order to function more effectively, at the expense of gentleness that comes with empathy and compassion.

MENTAL

Moonstone will help achieve a balance between heart and mind without losing the gentleness and caring needed, yet keep it in check to allow you to function effectively.

MAGICAL USES

moonstone_generator

Other names for this stone are water opal, fish-eye, and wolf’s eye. Long considered to have inherent connections to the moon by all ancient cultures familiar with the stone, it was used during the waxing of the moon for love charms and during the waning of the moon to foretell the future.

Many people who work with Tarot Cards, Runes, Crystal Balls, Medicine Cards or any other type of divining tool, keep a Moonstone with them to heighten intuition and perceptions while working with them.

The moonstone in India is a sacred stone; it is only permitted to be displayed on a yellow cloth. In this culture, they called the moonstone Candra Kanta, and it is told that moonlight from a full moon gives the gemstone occult and magical powers. It is believed to bring much good fortune and allows one to see the future.

In the Eastern cultures, Moonstone was favored for LOVE. They believed that wearing or carrying a moonstone would bring a new love into your life. They also believe that holding a piece of moonstone over their hearts after a quarrel, and then exchanging the stones with each other, would bring you back together.

To dream of moonstone means travel and good health, but may also symbolize the unfolding of spiritual and psychic development.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

Moonstones come in a variety of colors. The body color can range from colorless to gray, brown, yellow, green, or pink. The clarity ranges from transparent to translucent. The best moonstone has a blue sheen, perfect clarity, and a colorless body color. It is often worn in rings, pendants or bead necklaces.

moonstone_largeMoonstone is actually a variety of Orthoclase Feldspar that contains a Schiller (shimmering) effect or adularescent sheen. Adularescence is described as “an effect seen on certain minerals (the most famous, Opal and Moonstone) which cause it to display a billowy, rounded, ghost-like reflection with a bluish-whitish color emanating from the surface when the mineral is cut into a cabochon. It is caused by structural anomalies or build-up of water in the mineral.” Adularescent is derived from the mineral name, Adularia, of which Moonstone is a variety. Polished Moonstones also commonly exhibit chatoyancy (a narrow band of reflected light that produces a “cat’s eye” effect) or asterism (a six-rayed star effect produced by reflected or transmitted light).

Found as a rock-forming mineral in igneous, plutonic, and metamorphic rocks, Moonstone breaks (or cleaves) into blocky chunks very often at 90º angles creating tabular crystals. Most are complexly twinned, meaning they often grow as several sets of two interwoven crystals that are mirror images of each other.

The most common Moonstone in the Feldspar family is that of the mineral Adularia, but many famous and rarer specimens are from the Plagioclase Feldspars of Albite (Sodium Aluminum Silicate), along with the Oligoclase and Labradorite varieties.

Chemistry: KAlSi3O8 (Potassium Aluminum Silicate)
Class: Silicates
Subclass: Tectosilicates

Luster: Vitreous (glassy), pearly parallel to cleavage; transparent to translucent.
Crystal System: Monoclinic or prismatic
Crystal Habit: Tabular to prismatic crystals. Repeated twinning is common, showing as fine parallel lines on good cleavage faces.
Cleavage: Perfect in two directions at 90º
Fracture: Uneven – Flat surfaces (not cleavage) fractured in an uneven pattern.
Hardness: 6.0
Specific Gravity: 2.6
Streak: White
Other Characteristics: Exhibits adularescence, chatoyancy, or asterism.
Notable Occurrences: Sri Lanka, Burma, Madagascar, Germany, India, Tanzania, Brazil, U.S., Mexico.
Best Field Indicators: Cleavage, hardness, color, crystal habit.
Uses: Gemstone; mineral specimens

Alivan’s Wands

If you are looking for lathe-turned Harry Potter-style wands and other Potter paraphernalia, like hats, brooms, and house scarves from Hogwarts, this place is probably the biggest producer of that sort of thing, selling in retail outlets around the country. The wands are hand-turned by many different wood crafters out of hardwood, so are a cut above the resin replicas sold elsewhere. Wands are priced according to the type of wood used. Price range: $17 to $165.

Offers a selection of lathe-turned and fashioned wands that are modeled on the wand in the Harry Potter movies mostly. A unique feature is their “made-your-own wand” page at which the client may choose, wood, length, handle type, shaft type, and magical core material (though these are mainly from invented creatures from J.K. Rowling and some I could not recommend). Many exotic hardwoods are offered.

Truly exquisite works of art, these rings are made from wood and artfully crafted in British Columbia by David Finch. The touch of wood on the hand conveys the power of that tree to the wearer. APRIL MOON FACTS AND FOLKLORE

A full Moon in April brings frost. If the full Moon rises pale, expect rain.

  • On April 20, 1972, the lunar module of Apollo XVI landed on the moon with astronauts John Young and Charles Duke aboard. Thomas Mattingly remained in orbit around the moon aboard the command module.
  • One day later, on April 21, 1972, Apollo XVI astronauts John Young and Charles Duke drove an electric car on the surface of the moon. It’s still up there along with some expensive tools and some film that they forgot.
  • The period from the Full Moon through the last quarter of the Moon is the best time for killing weeds, thinning, pruning, mowing, cutting timber, and planting below-ground crops.

One of the most dramatic sights in the night sky—and inspiration for poets, artists, and lovers for millennia—full moons captivate us like nothing else.

Every month Earth’s moon goes through its phases, waning and waxing in its constant transformation from new moon to full moon and back again. Full moons occur every 29.5 days or so as the moon moves to the side of Earth directly opposite the sun, reflecting the sun’s rays off its full face and appearing as a brilliant, perfectly circular disk.

For millennia, humans have used the movement of the moon to keep track of the passing year and set schedules for hunting, planting, and harvesting. Ancient cultures the world over have given these full moons names based on the behavior of the plants, animals, or weather during that month.

January: Wolf Moon
Native Americans and medieval Europeans named January’s full moon after the howling of hungry wolves lamenting the midwinter paucity of food. Other names for this month’s full moon include old moon and ice moon.

February: Snow Moon
The typically cold, snowy weather of February in North America earned its full moon the name snow moon. Other common names include storm moon and hunger moon.

March: Worm Moon
Native Americans called this last full moon of winter the worm moon after the worm trails that would appear in the newly thawed ground. Other names include the chaste moon, death moon, crust moon (a reference to snow that would become crusty as it thawed during the day and froze at night), and sap moon, after the tapping of the maple trees.

April: Pink Moon
Northern Native Americans call April’s full moon the pink moon after a species of early blooming wildflower. In other cultures, this moon is called the sprouting grass moon, the egg moon, and the fish moon.

May: Flower Moon
May’s abundant blooms give its full moon the name flower moon in many cultures. Other names include the hare moon, the corn planting moon, and the milk moon.

June: Strawberry Moon
In North America, the harvesting of strawberries in June gives that month’s full moon its name. Europeans have dubbed it the rose moon, while other cultures named it the hot moon for the beginning of the summer heat.

July: Buck Moon
Male deer, which shed their antlers every year, begin to regrow them in July, hence the Native American name for July’s full moon. Other names include thunder moon, for the month’s many summer storms, and hay moon, after the July hay harvest.

August: Sturgeon Moon
North American fishing tribes called August’s full moon the sturgeon moon since the species was abundant during this month. It’s also been called the green corn moon, the grain moon, and the red moon for the reddish hue it often takes on in the summer haze.

September: Harvest Moon
The most familiar named moon, September’s harvest moon refers to the time of year after the autumn equinox when crops are gathered. It also refers to the moon’s particularly bright appearance and early rise, which lets farmers continue harvesting into the night. Other names include the corn moon and the barley moon.

October: Hunter’s Moon
The first moon after the harvest moon is the hunter’s moon, so named as the preferred month to hunt summer-fattened deer and fox unable to hide in now bare fields. Like the harvest moon, the hunter’s moon is also particularly bright and long in the sky, giving hunters the opportunity to stalk prey at night. Other names include the traveling moon and the dying grass moon.

November: Beaver Moon
There is disagreement over the origin of November’s beaver moon name. Some say it comes from Native Americans setting beaver traps during this month, while others say the name comes from the heavy activity of beavers building their winter dams. Another name is the frost moon.

December: Cold Moon
The coming of winter earned December’s full moon the name cold moon. Other names include the long night moon and the oak moon.

The Blue Moon
Each year, the moon completes its final cycle about 11 days before the Earth finishes its orbit around the sun. These days add up, and every two and a half years or so, there is an extra full moon, called a blue moon. The origin of the term is uncertain, and its precise definition has changed over the years. The term is commonly used today to describe the second full moon of a calendar month, but it was originally the name given to the third full moon in a season containing four full moons.

Astrorisa Moon Forecaster ~ The Virgo Full Moon

By Iya Olusoga ~Bisi Ade

Welcome to the full moon of Virgo, and its vibrations spanning 29 days, March 12th – April 10th.
Themes: Finances, actions, plans, business, burning the candle at both ends, treading water, feeling your way, attention to detail, and overworked vs.rest.
This Virgo moon time challenges our collective consciousness to determine how best to maneuver through our experiences and to know when to rest or to push forward. Whatever the case maybe, we’ll have to be careful of over taxing our resources (funds, health, time, etc.) With the sun in Pisces and moon in Virgo (water, mind, and earth), we can feel as though we’re dredging through a marsh. As we’re between solid ground and a large body of water. Which way should we go? To the left near solid ground or to the right near open water? Do we want to walk or swim? Which avenue and experience will get us there quicker? Which ever direction we take, will determine our experiences and impact our destiny.
