Time to ban horsemeat trade in all of North America, as investigation in Mexico uncovers horse sold as beef

“A new study in six Mexican cities has found horsemeat in nearly 10 percent of meat products that are being sold as beef…”

American horses and burros, both wild and domestic, are NOT food animals. – photo by Carol Walker of Wild Horse Freedom Federation

Mexico is forging ahead on animal protection. Earlier this year, its Congress made dogfighting a felony throughout the nation. Mexico City adopted an extraordinary charter on animal protection. A number of major food retailers in Mexico have said they will change their purchasing practices to stop buying eggs and pork from operations that confine hens and pigs in small confinement cages and crates. Our Humane Society International/Mexico office and partner organizations are working hard to keep this important and strategic country trending in the right direction and to also crack down on other abuses of animals.

Brutal Outlook for Healthy Wild Horses and Burros: BLM Calls for Shooting 90,000

Straight from the Horse's Heart

By Return to Freedom

“There needs to be a fairer distribution of resources—not more biased reports and recommendations aimed at capturing, removing or killing wild horses…”

On Thursday, the National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board recklessly voted to approve recommendations that call on the Bureau of Land Management to shoot tens of thousands of healthy wild horses and burros.

At its meeting in Grand Junction, Colorado, the advisory board recommended that BLM achieve its on-range population goal of 26,715 wild horses and burros while also phasing out the use of long-term holding facilities—both within three years.

If Congress allowed BLM to follow through on the independent board’s recommendations, that would mean the government shooting at least 90,000 healthy animals. The advisory board has no power to control policy.

The board also called for allowing international adoptions and sales, which have not been allowed before. During its deliberations, the board…

Straight from the Horse's Heart

Increase the budget in FY2019 to 3 million for reversible fertility control.

Phase out long-term holding over the next three years. (MURDER)

Increasing funding to support successful adoption programs and on the range management, and consider possibilities for international adoptions. (MURDER)

Wild Horses are Dying Under Zinke’s Lack of Care

Straight from the Horse's Heart

by Equine Advocates

As Corruption Allegations Against Pro-Horse Slaughter Interior Secretary, Ryan Zinke Continue to Mount, Wild Horses & Burros Continue to Die!

“I told ya before and I’ll tell ya again, my friggen ‘Brain’ is this big, really!”, drawled Dinky Zinke

Long before Ryan Zinke slithered his way to be confirmed as Interior Secretary under Trump, his views and agendas for wild and domestic equines were well-known. From the period long before he became a Montana Congressman when he was pushing for the return of horse slaughter so that a horse slaughterhouse could be built in his home state, and throughout his time in Congress, his famous quote basically sums up what he continues to stand for:

“If a horse is too old to breed, too old to ride or too expensive to feed, a horse is disposed of,” he said.

With that said, accusations about Zinke’s past and…

The United Horse Killers of America

The United Horse Killers of America
Part 3 – Forrest Lucas

Forrest Lucas, billionaire, Lucas Oil/Lucas Stadium owner, rancher and founder of the pro-horse slaughter, pro-horse soring, pro-puppy mill, anti-animal lobbying group. Protect the Harvest, is a major threat to the fight to end horse slaughter and to the protection and preservation of America’s Wild Horses and Burros.

Lucas is one of the loudest and most out-spoken horse slaughter proponents in the nation. He said, “…we’re out here organized…” and “…we need to get horse slaughter back.” That was before he was given power by the current administration. Now that he has it, he is taking this country on a downward spiral and attempting to use his money and influence to destroy as many humane policies as possible. […]

Advocates File Suit to Stop Illegal Removal of Wild Horses in Wyoming

Straight from the Horse's Heart

Equine Photographer, Carol Walker – by R.T. Fitch of Wild Horse Freedom Federation

Cheyenne, WY (October 6, 2017) . . . The American Wild Horse Campaign and wildlife photographers Carol Walker and Kimerlee Curyl filed suit today in U.S. District Court in Wyoming to stop the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) from illegally rounding up hundreds of wild horses in a helicopter capture operation currently underway in southwestern Wyoming.

The lawsuit charges the BLM with violating three federal laws by rounding up hundreds more horses than previously disclosed by excluding foals and weanlings from its official count of horses removed from the range. It also challenges the agency’s shipment of captured mustangs to two privately-owned feedlots that are not open to the public for viewing and adoption.

According to attorney William Eubanks of Meyer Glitzenstein and Eubanks, “BLM’s action of permanently removing hundreds more horses than it determined to…

Secretive Slaughter Summit speakers slither out from under a rock

Straight from the Horse's Heart

The National Horse & Burro Rangeland Management Coalition has released the videos of speakers from the Slaughter Summit that was recently held in Salt Lake City, Utah.  In a video that initially looks like the speaker is a talking hat and beard, we soon see it is actually John Ruhs, who is the Bureau of Land Management’s Nevada State Director and the BLM’s Acting Deputy Director of Operations.  You can watch this video HERE.

  John Ruhs

Yes, John, there IS something wrong.  The wild horses & burros wouldn’t cost taxpayers “$50 million” a year if the BLM would manage wild horses and burros on the range, and we can save this money and solve this “problem” if the BLM would give back the 22 million acres of federally protected Herd Areas that the BLM took away from the wild horses and burros, (where they were…

Wild Horse and Burro Hater Zinke continues to add lobbyists and DC insiders to Interior

Straight from the Horse's Heart

Ahead of potential confirmation votes, check out profiles of Interior nominees at https://departmentofinfluence.org/

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee is expected to vote on the nominations of Joseph Balash and Ryan Nelson to the Interior Department. Ahead of the vote, Western Values Project has taken a look at how the revolving door continues to spin between special interests, their lobbyists, and Secretary Ryan Zinke’s Interior Department.

Both nominees have been well documented on Western Values Project’s website for their lengthy histories of favoring big donors and special interests.

“Secretary Zinke is continuing to fill his cabinet with special interests and Washington insiders. While Interior continues to stack the deck with staff from the oil and gas industry, they seem set on ignoring the outdoor industry that our communities rely on. That explains why sportsmen, hunters and anglers are turning against the Secretary,”…

BLM Releases Decision Record plan to wipe out the Red Desert Complex after they destroy the Checkerboard

Straight from the Horse's Heart

by Carol Walker, Dir. of Field Documentation, Wild Horse Freedom Federation

BLM has announced it will be removing 2200 wild horses from the Red Desert Complex, starting in October 2017.  This would be after the Checkerboard Roundup, where the BLM is planning to remove 1560 wild horses starting in September.  This means 3760 wild horses will be removed from their homes and from their families, and this is over half the wild horses remaining in Wyoming.

This is insane.  Right now, Congress is considering the 2018 Budget which now includes language that will allow the killing of the 46,000 wild horses in short and long term holding as well as thousands more on the range.

Adding 3760 more horses makes absolutely no sense.  There is nowhere to even put this number of horses in short term holding unless the BLM has already begun shipping wild horses in holding to slaughter.

The Audacity of Horse Killers & How They Could Win

Straight from the Horse's Heart

By Susan Wagner, Pres. of Equine Advocates

It is quite unbelievable that in the midst of all the turmoil taking place in our country now due to natural disasters that horse slaughter proponents in the House of Representatives and the special interests from whom they take their marching orders would move to satisfy their deadly agendas by voting to kill the more than 46,000 healthy Wild Horses and Burros being held captive in BLM holding facilities.

The Stewart Amendment, inserted in the House Omnibus Bill by Rep. Chris Stewart of Utah, allows for the killing and sale “without regulation or limitation” (meaning to slaughter) of Wild Horses and Burros, thus removing any remaining federal protections they have.

The only hope left for these animals is for the U.S. Senate to act to protect them by passing the Udall-Graham Amendment…
