Sagittarius Full Moon

This full moon is shaping up to have the heady swiftness of the last new moon, another Grand Fire Trine forming with the Moon in Sagittarius and the Sun in Gemini. This fire trine forms between Saturn in Sagittarius at 24 degrees, Uranus in Aries at 27 degrees, and the North Node in Leo at 27 degrees.

Trines increase the velocity of energy, so we can expect relevant events affected by these planets and hours to increase in speed and impact. In the case of the node, the head of the dragon where our karmic future lies in the sign of creative expression and fun, now might be a nice time to engage ourselves in the drama of the moment. All the world is a stage — so act accordingly to make the most of it! With the moon sharing space with Saturn, the lord of restraint and constraints, it…

Pendulum Dowsing

Crooked Bear Creek Organic Herbs's avatarGood Witches Homestead

Many people have the ability to dowse, but are not aware of this very useful ‘talent’. Those who are interested in this may use different tools as a dowser including a locket on a neck chain to a quartz crystal. Some use a very simple device like a piece of strong string threaded through any lapidary stone or even plain beach pebble. Whatever you use it will need cleansing in sea salt water from time to time. When using crystals, however, it is important to note that they carry a strong energy of their own. Therefore they can work in the opposite direction according to the individual and indeed crystal. This can be confusing to a beginner and it’s necessary when using any crystal to first establish its polarities before working.

Remember that the heavier the crystal or stone the more ‘energy’ is required to activate it. If you are…

Dowsing With Pendulum’s

Crooked Bear Creek Organic Herbs's avatarGood Witches Homestead

You start by learning how to use your Pendulum, especially the signals needed for accuracy and the correct method of asking questions. Learn to make your home healthy and prevent diseases. You can accomplish water divining, improving water quality, and locate people and objects.

BONDING WITH YOUR PENDULUM

A Pendulum can be made from a paperclip on a piece of cotton thread, a brass weight on a string, or a cannon ball on a chain (if you are strong enough to lift it!). Some people use key tags or a crystal on a metal chain. A glass bead, about 3/8 th. inch ( 1 cm) diameter (spherical or pear-shaped) suspended by about 15 inches (40 cm) of braided thread (e.g. a shoe lace) is a good compromise.

First bond together with your Pendulum as a team, and let the Force for Good be with you – so hold your Pendulum…

Pendulum’s: How To Use

Crooked Bear Creek Organic Herbs's avatarGood Witches Homestead

Pendulums are one of the easiest and quickest ways to perform divination. Pendulums have been used for centuries as means to divine the future and to find out answers to pressing questions that people would like to have answers for.

Even though pendulums are easy to use in a sense, there is much more to divining through pendulums then meets the eye. In order to perform a pendulum reading properly, steps should be taken and considered before you begin to ask your questions to the pendulum.

This article will explain all the necessary steps, measures, and routines that should be used before you begin to divine with your pendulum.

STEP 1: CHOOSING YOUR PENDULUM

Pendulums come in many different shapes and sizes as well as materials that are used to craft and make them. Some popular pendulums include gemstone pendulums, metal pendulums, and wood pendulums.

Gemstone Pendulums are made from…

Full Moon 9 June 2017 ~ Magic Wound ~ Darkstar Astrology

via Full Moon June 2017 ~ Magic Wound by Darkstar Astrology

The Full Moon on 9 June 2017 falls at 18º Sagittarius decan 2 The Full Moon June 2017 forms part of what the Huber school called an irritation triangle. This can cause sudden fits of anger. Since Pluto and Ceres are plugged into the ‘irritation’, outbursts in the collective will reveal where there have been abuses of power in relation to children or the vulnerable. We could see where the unscrupulous have made money out of human trafficking.(Eg exploiting boatloads of migrants across the Mediterranean at a great risk to those migrants lives.)The fixed star for this Full Moon is Sabik, found in Ophuichus, a favorite of occultists.

Full Moon June In Sagittarius 2

This Full Moon June is great for natural healing, especially when it comes to women’s health, genetics and midwifery. Breeding and DNA are a theme here as the serpents symbol so closely resembles the double helix and the caduceus of Mercury is also highlighted. There is also a certain amount of deception too however… The forked tongue of the snake makes itself felt here in the form of jealousy or spiteful rumors. Sabik is problematic generally, so the lunar energy makes it hard for us to clarify truth from fiction. What is certain though, is the ability to conjure up fanciful stories! These tales are so dramatic and entertaining, that in the end no one cares if they are actually factual or not. Maybe the fiction contains an element of truth that is eternal, like a myth.

The Moon has some dignity in Sagittarius 2. One of its unique abilities in this position is to unify desperate elements together in order to fulfill as specific goal. Moon in Sagittarius 2 is rather like a blinkered horse. That way it won’t be tempted, or detracted by the forbidden fruit of temptation. Austin Coppock warns of Moon in Sagittarius 2’s “greater powers of concentration and focus.” as it also carries with it “the potential for monomania, and its gift of perseverance will fortify the fools quest as well as the sages errand.” At the same time I do think this Full Moon’s healing potential is best channeled into a single goal. Otherwise the Moon’s power here can sour Sagittarius 3’s healing medicine, if it is allowed to run amok and not funneled positively.

Full Moon June ~ Fixed Star Sabik

Now we will see why we have to be so careful with this Full Moon June’s magical potential. Sabik, is a star on the right leg of the Serpent Bearer or more famously the so called 13th sign Ophuichus. Generally “When Ophiuchus, encircled by the serpent’s great coils, rises he renders the forms of snakes innocuous to those born under him. They will receive snakes into the folds of their flowing robes, and will exchange kisses with these poisonous monsters and suffer no harm.” [1] Robson doesn’t seem to like Sabik saying “It causes wastefulness, lost energy, perverted morals, and success in evil deeds.” [2] These ‘evil deeds’ are probably to do with the use of magic as manipulative sorcery. But in the case of good-hearted seers who use the Tarot or other means of divination, including astrology, they should have the ‘success’ without them being branded as ‘evil’. Sabik’s potential for ‘evilness’ depends on which planet this star falls on.

Full Moon June 2017 Aspects

Moon opposite Ceres is the aspect equivalent to the Salvation Army, seeking to rescue those in the most need. Those touched by this Full Moon must be careful however, that their saving doesn’t turn into a savior complex. When this aspect warps, it warps big. At this time we can be the smothered or do the smothering. At the most negative, Moon opposite Ceres can be one of the narcissistic parent who engulfs their child to the extent that the child doesn’t even realize she is being abused.
Sun quincunx Pluto puts a quirky slant on Plutonian sexuality, but sometimes it can be downright kinky. Its strength comes from playing the lovable freak card. But those touched by this Full Moon could get quite obsessive in their need to be themselves at all costs. The collective mood at this Full Moon is one where one is are apt to play the fool and act rebelliously because it is empowering in a world were we feel disenfranchised. I’m thinking of 4Chan memes and such.

The Irritation triangle:

“This figure needs constant movement and stimulating activity. The energies stored in it are looking for a way to resolve the state of opposing forces, the blockage of energy flow and the rigid attitude they produce….the liberation of tension is a desperate longing. Sudden bursts of anger can arise as a reaction to external pressures. The defensive behavior does not last long, though, it is over quickly and forgotten again.”[4]

Full Moon June 2017 Summary

Full Moons tend to make us purge and release things from our lives, so we need to make sure that we are in control of this and no one is forcing our hand! Sometimes we can let go of things that we regret later, due to heightened emotions and impulsive reactions. The bright light of the sun throws a spotlight on our lunar demons. In this Full Moon the shadow is extra dark with the stark shaft of light from the irritation triangle shining on Sun conjunct Ceres.

This Full Moon wound could show up where we have felt scarred, betrayed or tainted. The wound could come from family scandals, a problem with inheritance or an undesirable ancestral trait. On the other hand, having an overly-cosseted childhood can leave one ill-equipped to deal with the gritty reality of the outside world. The modern day demand for ‘safe spaces’ is a good example of how wrapping people up in cotton wool can diminish emotional robustness.

Gemini New Moon 4° in House 8
Sun in Gemini 4° in House 8

Planetary Energies
Moon (Osupa / Yemoja),Sun (Orun / Orunmila, Olofi), Mercury (Esu-Elegbara), Mars (Ogun), Saturn (Obaluaiye), Uranus (Sango), Pluto (Oya), and Venus (Oshun).
Themes:
Duality, balance, conflict, reflection, development, effort, business growth, initiative, self control, delays, freedom from anxiety, a sense of purpose, and “knowing whether it’s black or red”.
Welcoming the New Moon (Osupa Titun) of Gemini, the archetype of both Ibeji and Esu. This forecasts runs from May 25th – June 22,2017.
This new moon brings with it expressions related to thought, mental clarity, confusion and discernment. We, for the next 28 days will focus much of our mental attention on forms of personal opportunities and the need to be sure of the best direction to take. It is through our ability to connect to our higher self that clear and sure answers come. This is the moon time to be aware and clear of what and who we are identifying and associating with. It is also a good idea to check one’s natal chart to determine where the signs Cancer, Gemini, Aries, and Aquarius are positioned, and what sign Mars resides in.
Some people will notice they and others are dialoguing a lot about what they want to receive, acquire, or achieve. We’re all thinking-thinking-and thinking some more, “is the glass 1/2 empty or 1/2 full”?
This overthinking or desire to have, can lead us towards impulsive decisions only if we’re not aware of what emotions / desires are triggering the thoughts in our heads.
This is also a moon time of “goading followers and unscrupulous leaders” those in positions of authority may set  false agendas, and each of us must decide if those set agendas  are relevant enough to accept and follow. Unfortunately, some people will be too enthralled to care about relevancy, thus becoming “blind followers.” This example is related to the Uranus expression, thus unexpected changes within our luck and opportunities will be happening. Uranus 26° in Aries in House 7.
The Yoruba say, the oldest Ibeji (twins) is kehinde (the 2nd born), and taiwo (the 1st born) comes to taste the world, then reports back to kehinde, Thus kehinde learns about the good and bitterness of aiye (world) from taiwo, and (kehinde) becomes wiser. We can use that analogy and apply it to the lunar messages for this moon time. We must turn back (inward) towards our higher self, which has learned all the mistakes and techniques which makes it the wiser. Through reconnecting to our higher self , our spiritual self, we also then become the wiser, knowing what “to taste” and if it’s safe to “enter the world.”
During This Moon Time
Gemini Moon / Sagittarius shadow side

Some people will notice a heightened awareness of reasoning happening for them, and others will become aware of the need to pay closer attention to their situation, though it may be challenging to do so. This moon time calls for a balancing between our emotions and our mental skills.
During this moon time creative mental exploration is in overdrive; there’s an enormous amount of Venus energy flowing. Yet this creative Venus/ Oshun is a bit afflicted being semi-square to both Moon and Sun. This means during this time Venus enhances the Uranus in Aries expression of “goading followers and unscrupulous leaders” because this Venus transit lessens some people’s will power.
For others this Venus transit causes internal creative conflicts, those who experience the scrutiny of others may give too much credence to their critics’ opinions, thus lessening their own value regarding their own work and ideas.
During this moon time some will travel more than they’ve previously done for the past 2 months. If we’re not mentally traveling, then there is physical traveling.
During this moon time, laziness can become an all-embracing issue. Due to mental and emotional exhaustion. Others at this time may choose to take a creative time out i.e secluding themselves to paint, draw, do yoga etc.
Others at this time may be drawn to water, having longer bath-shower time, going to the beach or lake, visiting water spas, receiving water massages etc. The mid-heaven (house 10) for this moon time is  14° Cancer, and we will be balancing the elemental energies of both water/ emotions (house 10) and air / mentality (Libra in house 1; sun-moon Gemini in house 8).
During this time some people will also fall in love with love, as they are connecting to another form of ”following” but again their connection is influenced by the position of Cancer. Then there are those who feel inspired to follow a new or once forgotten dream, connecting to the energies of ideas and idealism.
The Sagittarius shadow aspect of this moon time inspires us on some level to inquire or to be ready to discard something. To identify what possibly has left us feeling empty or unsatisfied about something. It compels us to either become courageous or to recognize a need to be mentally courageous and to go after what we want.
Important Dates:
June 3, 2017, Sun 13° Gemini / Moon 4° Libra, pushes our collective consciousness towards clearly understanding our moral positions and to hold firmly to it, though that stance will be challenged. This is a day when many people can lose their direction, their faith, and their moral compass breaks. This day is a day that points towards a “weakening of one’s own Spirit.” This is when the message of being swayed by others (those in authority) reaches its strongest influence. Here we must be careful not to aggressively say what is on our minds without careful deliberation. Rebellious acts aren’t favored, and there’s a strong indication of bad natured people coming into the picture.
June 12, 2017, Sun 21° Gemini, Moon 22° Capricorn, for many this is the date that will determine if what they’ve worked hard to achieve becomes their reality. It’s a date laden with fragility, the scale can tip in either direction, and how well we previously handled the strong Cancer 14° in house 10, the house of vocations, will show its results now. This day can also bring a confusing vibration with it, causing some to place their wants before theirs and other’s needs, thus be ready for someone to ”drop the ball.”
Maneuvering
through this Gemini Moon towards blessings (ire)
1. Eboleri, or rogations for clarity of thought and level-headedness.
2. Receive a personal reading.
3. Check in with the oracle before June 12th regarding any work you’d like to accomplish. Find out if anything, what can be done to maximize your success.
4. Good moon time to focus on resolving legal issues, and to attend to any outstanding legal matters, including completing paperwork.
5. Before striking out on a new path, determine if it is a relevant move.
6. Meditation can bring powerful visions and clarity now. Moon will be in Gemini May 25-26 and part of May 27th.
7. Be mindful what you are thinking and saying, we can manifest much by way of mental and audible energy (thoughts and words of power).
8. Bring emotions under control. Be careful of behaviors of reckless abandonment.
9. When satisfying the wishes of others do so from a position of stern authority aka don’t get suckered.
10. Avoid giving into emotional fear, avoid looking for comfort, and love in the wrong places.
11. Honor your skills, and follow your Ori.
Have a mentally clear, creative, and productive New Moon!

Gemini New Moon, 5-25-2017

New Moon 5-25-2017

A lovely grand fire trine is forming during the sun and moon’s passage through Gemini, and should make for swift and satisfying communications. The North Node in Leo, Uranus in Aries, and Saturn in Sagittarius are all in accordance. We flow smoothly from place to place, transmitting ideas and being readily understood, our messages are clear and understandable. Contracts are exchanged, agreements struck, and moving from place to place and enjoying the novel and the new comes easy and carefree. All these things under the auspices of Gemini and Mercury should find favor.

That’s not to say this moon does not have its share of complications — as with everything, we have some harder aspects to deal with, but I know with my business and financial interests firmly rooted in audio and creative writing, I’ll be sure to initiate projects to give them that extra oomph! Especially with Mercury in Taurus, Taurus will make your projects long lasting and unlike Geminis often flighty tendency to move on to the new interesting flavor of the moment, Taurus has the steam and endurance to see things through to the end.  This is a boon to work that requires both an initiatory spirit and a need for refining and crafting.

Now that we’ve highlighted the good, let’s look at the not so good.

Pushy Venus at 19 degrees of Aries may indicate a fast and furious romance that goes against the grain of more conservative and cautious Capricorn, where Pluto at 19 degrees squares. Capricorn is going to want to iron out the details and Pluto isn’t going to give up control or stop digging for the underlying meaning of things. Add in Black Moon Lillith in Sagittarius at 11 degrees, who is squared by Neptune at 14 degrees of Pisces, and it suggests that romances initiated under this moon are going to be plagued by both the benefits and the downsides of magnetic sexuality — sometimes, we rush in to satisfy pleasure without considering the consequences. This act-now think-later attitude will certainly yield an affair to remember given the Venus in Aries heat, and the Lillith in Sagittarius magnetism, where Saturn is struggling to keep a lid on the happy-go-lucky archer. Those squares to Pluto and Neptune, though, suggest all the sticky complications of a love affair gone wrong, an extra marital affair, infidelity, power struggles, and all the lying such situations tend to generate. Of course, this might also figure in more than only love, but also money.

If these squares with their clashing energy weren’t potent enough, we have further semi-squares, creating aftershocks and stall points that are less easily resolved.

In particular, Venus in Aries semi-square the Gemini sun and moon, and Mercury in Taurus semi-square Mars in Gemini, also suggest, in spite of the burning power of this Grand Fire Trine, we may encounter that what course of action we decide upon under this new moon now creates a domino effect of unforeseen consequences; projects which begin with great promise might not complete to schedule, but bear this in mind — this is not necessarily a negative! Consider that a writer, initiating a creative project, might end up going through steep and rigorous edits, all of which give the sensation of spinning wheels in a rut, but which, over the course of months, bears a great deal of fruit in the form of awards or recognition, or increased pay. Use this Grand Fire Trine well!

I advise anyone to take on the qualities of Mercury and be ready to think on your feet to counter the difficult aspects of the semi-squares.

Less palatable is the opposition forming between Mars in Gemini and Saturn in Sagittarius. We might have to face up to responsibilities for our quick words or decisions, or deal with clashes with authority figures and arguments that spring up around them. This may be the case where you know you’re right, but someone who holds power refuses to acknowledge they are in the wrong, and it costs you. This is the time for swallowing your pride and picking your battles, and you may have to choose diplomacy over valor.

Lastly, a Taurus Mercury inconjunct Jupiter in Libra might have us sticking to our guns when we should be compromising with our friends or in our relationships, and as a result, we don’t quite see eye to eye. Taurean inflexibility will not smooth things over in your personal life, as fluid Mercury is better when he exerts his mercurial spirit. Be willing to bend to influence, for if you cannot bend, the inconjunct might force you to break! Be generous with your spirit and your words to and these should blend nicely with the Grand Fire Trine and help you sidestep the less desirable effects of the inconjunct.

Themes: Perseverance, harmony, the law, medical attention, grief, happiness, return vs loss, finances, opportunity, caution, initiative vs lacking initiative, delays vs. movement, and confrontation vs. peace.
Welcome to the Sun in Taurus, archetype of Oshun and Full Moon in Scorpio, the archetype of Oya moon time.  Sun in Taurus, house 7 the house of friends, enemies, frienemies, close associates, contracts, the law, lovers, and personal experiences. Meets Moon in Scorpio, house 1 sharing space with Libra also in house 1. House 1, the house of determination, personal desires and interests, the physical body and its vitality, and personal enterprises. These houses and the messages of this moon forecast would remain active for the next 29 days: May 10th – June 8th

What a powerful moon time and its influence upon our collective consciousness. During these next 29 days, our collective consciousness will guide us towards expressing an overly abundance of giving or receiving of goodness from the heart as well as an overly abundance of taking or receiving heartache or loss, this of course depends on which side of the spectrum we fall…Moon in Scorpio, archetype of Oya settles in house 1, and aforementioned shares this house with AC Libra also archetype of Oshun. These two characters residing in house 1 strongly impacts one’s stubborn, determined nature, and influences one’s interests in creative and sexual pleasures. Some people may want to go out on the town and enjoy themselves a bit during this lunar season. Others may want to participate in other forms of creative enjoyment, but whatever we’re drawn to, the 1st house does indicate what comes to us, as well as what we are attracted to.
Have a successful, self promoting, self encouraging, safe and insightful full moon time!

On Keeping a Spiritual Journal | The Druid’s Garden

Recently, I took some time to go back through the many spiritual journals I have kept on my journey deeper into the mysteries of the druid tradition and my relationship with nature. These journals spanned over a decade. They included a bit of everything: garden interactions, meditations, nature observations, events in my life of deep spiritual significance, recipes, notes from gatherings and visits, stories, experiences with rituals, and much more. I am so grateful to have kept these journals and re-reading them allowed me to rediscover so many pieces about that journey. They allowed me to see not only my own growth over time, but reminded me of important events and encouraged me further on my path.

Journaling and writing down one’s journey doesn’t come easy for many, and I, too, have to work at it!  Further, in working with those new to the druid path through my work as an Archdruid with the AODA, I’ve come to realize that many folks don’t know how to keep a spiritual journal nor what it can be used for or why they should do it. In my professional work as a writing professor, I know how difficult it is for some people to write anything because they lack the tools, motivation, or inspiration to do so. So, given this, I thought I’d take the time today to write about spiritual journals, why we keep them, and tips and strategies for keeping them (and keeping them well).

Why keep a spiritual journal?

When you are engaging in a spiritual practice of any kind, it is really helpful to document that practice. So let’s start by exploring the reasons why you would want to keep a spiritual journal.

The difference between sacred spaces and mundane spaces. One of the aspects of spiritual practices is that we are in a different head space for the duration of those practices than we are in the regular world. This is true not only of meditation and rituals but also of visits to natural places. We may gain deep insights or have moments of clarity and awakening and retaining those insights are critical for our development. If we don’t write them down, we are very apt to lose them.

I have found that in order to “not lose anything,” I have to write down my experiences in ritual or meditation immediately after they happen (often, I will write in my journal before I even close a sacred grove in ritual or before I leave the forest). This allows me to write about these experiences while they are fresh and in the forefront of my head. If I put off writing down my experiences, the longer that time goes by, the less I will remember and remember accurately–especially because visits to wild places and rituals alter our consciousness.

Inaccuracy of memory. Our memories are imperfect instruments and we can forget many things. If we write our experiences and understandings down (or use one of the other methods I share here), we offer our future selves a record of those experiences, which is a powerful spiritual tool. Trying to keep everything in our heads is a sure way to lose some of the critically important details or insights we gain as part of our spiritual practices.

Some journals that are mixed media/collage with spiritual themes...

To illustrate this, I’ll share a story here. I was out foraging for the day by myself, and I ended up in a really brushy area that required me to slog my way through about a two-acre bramble and brush patch. During this experience, I was in a deep meditative space. I had a critical number of keen insights about nature–all in a row (it must have been the stars aligning). The problem is, I had too many at once! (One of those keen insights about nature became my earlier discussion of weedtending, weedwalking, and weedcrafting while a second became my discussion of first-aid responder plants). I had recently lost my small journal I usually carried in my crane bag (to a river–it carried it away!), so I didn’t have anything to write down my insights on that particular day. And so, lacking any other means, I tried to commit as many as I could to memory. When I finally got back later that evening, all had escaped except the insights on the two posts I included above. Try and meditate as I might, I could not find the other insights anywhere in my brain–they were left in the bramble patch!

Keeping a Record. Documenting your practices and experiences through journals offers your future self a record about what you are feeling, experiencing, and the things you are engaging with at that particular point in time. This is a wonderful tool for tracking and understanding your own spiritual development. I love going back and reading my old journals and seeing just how far I have come! It’s also helpful to look at the journals and get a sense of what I was struggling with then, what I’m still struggling with, and what new things have come up.

Focusing, Expanding, and Reflection on Your Thoughts.  Journaling is not just a process of writing down exactly what happened or what the insights were, but it’s also a powerful tool and opportunity to ponder or sit with those experiences further.  And so, we gain a double benefit from this work. Reflecting on experiences that just happened allows you another way, which I see as another form of meditation, into those experiences. First, I have found often that after I finish a physical journey, spiritual journey, meditation, ritual, or whatever, writing down what has happened and my thoughts and insights about what has happened allows me to further shape and expand those thoughts (and actually, this is why I got into blogging!)  Part of it is that you are not just getting the initial insight, but taking the time to think about it deeper and focus on it through the journaling experience. This helps the insights and experiences come into sharper focus. Second, reflection also allows us to slow down and think about what we experienced, synth sizing our experiences and our own understandings. We can pick things apart, turn them around, wonder about them, and really gain the ability to see them from multiple angles there in our journal.  It might be that this kind of work needs to happen over a longer period of time than one entry, and that is perfectly acceptable as well.  I’ll also mention here that research in writing studies strongly supports both of the above–we learn through writing and we gain much from reflection!

Content of the Journals: What to Write

The question of what should go into a journal is obviously a very personal one.  Here are some possibilities for you to consider:

Documenting regular practices. In many of the esoteric traditions, keeping a “magical journal” is a required practice. It’s very helpful to document regular practices and their effects, especially over time. For example, each day I do the AODA’s Sphere of Protection ritual. In the years I was really learning it, I wrote down daily what happened. Now that my practice has stabilized, I no longer find it necessary to write down each day’s sphere unless something out of the ordinary happens during the sphere; but I still find myself writing about it regularly. I do write about my regular meditations, and that’s part of my habitual journal practice.

Some more spiritually-themed journals with colorful watercolor pages...

Salient, important things. I once spoke with a woman who told me she was spending more time writing in her journals than in her spiritual practices and was frustrated with the length of time it took to journal. I inquired further and discovered that she was writing down literally everything she was doing. While this certainly is an approach that you can take to spiritual journaling, I’m not sure its one I’d advocate. You’d spend more time, as she did, writing than actually engaging in your spiritual practices! Instead, what I advocate is writing down things of meaning, of salience, and of significance. In other words, I don’t write down every little thing (“I drove to the park”) but I do generally document what I did, what happened, and what I thought about it (“in my walk in the woods, this struck me because of…”).

Ideas, Plans, and Goals. I have found it useful to write about goals, ideas, and plans. If you write goals, check in on them regularly and see how you are progressing with them (a simple goal might be to develop a regular daily protective practice, or to spend more time in nature, or to observe the full and new moons in some way).

Nature observations. I have found it particularly helpful to document my observations and interactions with nature, given that I’m on a path of nature-based spirituality. For this reason, I almost always take a journal when I’m going out and about (even a small one I can carry with me, although I have a propensity for small journals getting eaten by bodies of water!)

Some nice leather journals (both filled!)

Reflections over time. At the end of the journal, when I have only 10-20 or so pages left, I find it really useful to go back through the journal and record any patterns in my thinking, any changes, anything that sticks out of significance to me. It may take me a year or more to fill a journal, but is a very good practice and then helps me “launch” the next journal with a vision and goals in mind.

Photos, drawings, plant matter, and memorabilia. You don’t have to be limited to words alone–consider adding drawings, photos, plant matter, and other memorabilia.

The Look and Feel of Your Journal

Especially when you are starting out, the finding or making the right journal is really important. There’s something about opening up a fine journal, one that you are attracted to, and writing in it. It’s nice to see it sitting on our shelf, nice to hold and cherish. Your journal might be something you make or something you buy. (I can write a post on bookbinding and spiritual journal making if there is interest. Let me know!) You may also find that you may develop certain preferences (thickness of paper, lined or unlined, etc).

I think that there is something special about keeping a physical journal and I would strongly recommend you keep your journal physically. For one, if you are taking it into nature and into sacred spaces with you, the last thing you want is an electronic device in those spaces. The screens have a way of pulling you away and into them rather into the space. If the purpose of the journal is to record words, I would suggest using old-fashioned methods.

On the outside: If you are going to go with a purchased journal, You want a journal that lays flat, that is enjoyable to write in, and that is well constructed.  One place to look is on Etsy and similar places and seeing if you can purchase a nice journal that was handmade with care and love.  You’ll support an artist and also have a wonderful journal.   Some journal makers (especially those working in leather) can make a journal cover that you can then replace the insides. This means that you could buy one journal + cover, and then when you are done, put the cover on a new journal and keep going, placing the old journal on your shelf. This is a nice option and represents a limited investment.

On the Inside: One of my very early spiritual journals was a simple affair, but homemade. I began by purchasing some hot press, low quality watercolor paper and folding them in half, making signatures. I bound the journal using a Coptic stitch technique with two boards. Then, in each of the pages, I did a simple watercolor wash. The watercolor pages dried and then, when I opened the journal, I had a variety of colorful surfaces on which to write.

My first dedicated spiritual journal (made when I joined the AODA)

You can do the same thing with cheap watercolors and any journal designed for multiple media or mixed media (these are readily available in arts and craft stores). These kinds of journals will be thicker and contain less pages, but will be sturdy and wonderful for colorful washes and bold printing.
