Rest, Retreat, and Balance at the Fall Equinox

Dana's avatarThe Druid's Garden

I don’t know about you, but 2020 has been a hell of a year.  Usually, the Fall Equinox and the coming of the dark half of the year is a time for celebration, as Fall is my favorite season. But this year, the idea of moving into the dark half of the year when so much has already been dark is hard.  We have so much loss, death, employment insecurity, health insecurity, food insecurity, sickness, political unrest….the list goes on and on. Here in the US in particular, things are really difficult and many are dealing with basic issues to security, including financial security, food security, health security, and obviously, a lot of isolation. So, given these challenges, I think its important to fall back on our spiritual practices for nurturing, support, and grounding and embrace what the season offers. The Fall Equinox, as a time of balance, can help…

CRYSTAL HEALING FOR PANDEMIC FATIGUE

Crystal Healing for Pandemic Fatigue / www.krista-mitchell.com

First off: what is pandemic fatigue?

“It’s a very real feeling of exhaustion stemming from the effects of the novel coronavirus on your life — from stay-at-home orders to the fear of getting ill to losing jobs…Wrestling with intense emotions day after day drains your energy, causing pandemic fatigue.
The hallmark sign of pandemic fatigue is a sense of inner weariness.” –  uclahealth • July 7, 2020

If you’ve been feeling any of the following, or if it’s been more intense these past few months, you’re likely experiencing pandemic fatigue:

  • uncertainty
  • despair
  • chronic high-level stress
  • burnout
  • sore eyeballs
  • loneliness
  • exhaustion
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • sleeplessness
  • hopelessness

It is not an exaggeration to say that 2020 has been a life-altering, world-changing year.

While understandably there has been heavy emphasis on physical health and safety measures, there must also be heavy emphasis on the mental + emotional toll of the pandemic (including our economic and social responses to it), and the impact that is having on our overall mental health and emotional well-being.

“As the pandemic worsens, and disruptions to daily life worsen, mental health professionals need to be prepared for an increase in mental health and substance abuse problems.” – Research brief from the Parenting in Context Research Lab, U Michigan, March 31, 2020

The shutdowns taught us that the reality of our daily lives could dramatically change, and quickly. This paradigm shift intensified the focus on the climate change crisis, and also a badly needed wake-up call in terms of racism and the systemic racism entrenched in our societies.

The conversation became about education, awareness, expansion of consciousness, and mindfully co-creating a better world and future.

But here’s the thing my friends: it’s easy to give up and stop caring, or stop fighting, when you’re tired.

The stressors introduced, or heightened, by this pandemic have hit people hard, especially for those on the lower-end of the social and economic scale:

  • fears of getting sick, job/income loss, of not being able to pay bills
  • greater levels of overall uncertainty
  • increased responsibilities of caregiving, child care, and education, which has required extra multi-tasking to the point of overwhelm
  • loneliness and isolation, especially for the marginalized and elderly
  • disruption of regular routines including diet, exercise, and sleep

The concern is that all of this will push us collectively to a mental health breaking point – but it doesn’t have to, we can find healthy ways to respond that will help pull us, our families, and our communities through, better and stronger!

Response is a key word here: response belies a feeling of consideration, wisdom, and empowerment. It’s a choice, as opposed to reactions that are often triggered by our wounded or fearful selves.

Our reaction to any of the above stressors or symptoms of pandemic fatigue may be to isolate, self-medicate, binge, overeat, attack, go into denial, feel extra sensitive or vulnerable, or criticize.

Please don’t judge yourself if you have experienced any of these reactions recently – at least now you may have a greater understanding as to why, and I have outlined below some healthier coping practices you can put in place to support yourself.

Herbal Grief Ritual for Healing of the Soul

Dana's avatarThe Druid's Garden

2020 has been challenging for nearly everyone in a multitude of ways.  One of the things that we are faced with right now is grief: grief over lost friends and family who have passed, grief over a previous way of life that seems to be gone for good, grief over lost careers and uncertain futures, grief over continued suffering and uncertainty with regards to our climate and life on this planet.  I have certainly been experiencing many of these things.  Perhaps the two most central things that happened to me this summer was the loss of a good friend after a long and difficult battle with cancer and the destruction of a large part of our family’s property to put in a septic line.  The loss of many trees that I had grown up with and a beautiful ecosystem that we had cultivated into a botanical sanctuary.  These losses happened…

September 2020

Crooked Bear Creek Organic Herbs's avatarGood Witches Homestead

As is so often the case these days the weather seems to be mirroring the volatile and unexpected nature of the energy flow. As September approached there was an abrupt end to the summer weather almost as though a switch had been flicked. There is now a distinct feeling of Autumn in the air something that is also reflected in the garden and countryside around us.

The Energies of September

A good way to sum up what the energies of September have in store for us would be to say that the roller coaster ride of transformation looks set to continue to increase in intensity.

The winds of change are blowing in, both literally and figuratively, and they are gathering force. This is not something to be concerned about, but it will help to expect the unexpected and be prepared to flow through any transformational opportunities that come your way.

Drought workings: A Druid’s Perspective on Drought and Dry Weather

Dana's avatarThe Druid's Garden

2020 is certainly a year to remember for many of us in the human realm.  Here in Western Pennsylvania and up along many parts of New England, we’ve had an additional serious problem affecting the natural world—an extreme drought. This summer, the jet stream is way off of its normal course and so most of the major storms that would typically hit us have been forced south of us, creating the  “moderate” drought that we are now in and causing uncharacteristically dry conditions.  know there are other serious droughts around the world, such as the three-year drought currently happening in Germany.  Climate change is making these kinds of weather events all the more common and teaching us powerful lessons along the way.  In today’s post, I’ll share some drought lessons, drought land healing, and ways of working and honoring water.

Entering the Harvest Moon Cycle with a New Moon in Leo | Moonthly Lunar Report

Entering the Harvest Moon Cycle with a New Moon in Leo | Moonthly Lunar Report

Happy new moon in Leo! The days are getting shorter and the nights are slowly becoming longer as we head into the last months of summer.

We are entering the Harvest Moon cycle. Summer is slowly coming to and end, and many of us are feeling change stirring in our bones. This new moon holds a lot of solar energy. Even though it will be a dark new moon, it will still cause much to “light up” or be revealed within ourselves and our personal lives.

This new moon can cause some bursts of energy to take place. Right now, Mars is square Saturn and Pluto, and trine the sun and the moon. This can cause some sensitivity to peak. Some might be feeling very energetic and motivated while others might feel impatient or quick to anger. Remember to check in with yourself and your emotions often so as to not act too rash right now.

As this month progresses, the Harvest Moon cycle offers you many ways to embrace your goals and reap the bounties of your hard work.

Each new moon, using our Spirit de la Lune Decks and Tune to the Moon Planners we put together a Moonthly Lunar Report to help us navigate the cycle ahead.

Welcoming Abundance for the Full Corn Moon | Prosperity Jar Spell

Happy Full Corn Moon!

Full Corn Moon Prosperity Candle Spell | Spirit de la Lune

August 3rd marks the Full Corn Moon, a time representing the first harvest, and welcoming in the abundance in your life. We also just celebrated Lughnasadh on the 1st of August. Lughnasadh is the sabbat or holiday that marks the first of the harvest season.

Summer is almost over and all the hard work that has been put in towards the beginning of the year is now about to pay off as we reap the rewards of our efforts.

Lions Gate Portal | Spirit de la Lune

We are also in the beginning of the Lions Gate Portal. The portal happens every August 8th when the Sun, Sirius and Earth align. Sirius is the 2nd brightest star and is also known as our “Spiritual Sun.”

During the portal there is an increase in feminine and intuitive energy. Many report feeling extra sensitive to energies, or extra aware of synchronicities or spiritual downloads.

The Lions Gate Portal is an important time for you to access your heart chakra and make sure you are in alignment with your path.

During this full moon you might feel especially tuned in and aware of the spiritual downloads that might be happening right now. After several intense full moons, eclipses and retrogrades, this full moon will feel like a breath of fresh air!

The Corn Moon wants us to slow down and enjoy the fruits of our labors. The period of abundance and harvest doesn’t last forever, so it’s important to stop and enjoy it!

A Walk Through a Sacred Garden

Dana's avatarThe Druid's Garden

View of some of our gardens at Lughnasadh!  Here you can see our main garden (on the left, annuals) and the meditation garden (on the right; smaller perennials). We also have other perennial patches we are cultivating on other parts of the property.  And of course, our wonderful greenhouse in the center!  Behind the greenhouse is a compost tumbler.  In front of the greenhouse, you can see our duck enclosure (more about that later).  Towards the back in the center, you can see our guinea/chicken enclosure and goose enclosure.  The compost area is off to the back left.

Today, we are taking a walk through the sacred gardens at the Druid’s Garden Homestead.  There are so many lessons to learn with a simple walk in a beautiful garden.  Today’s Lughnasadh garden walk reminds us of the power of nature to heal wounds, strengthen our spirits, and help us through challenging…
